About 15 miles of cobblestone still remain in the five boroughs of New York City, mostly preserved in historic districts including, SoHo, Greenwich Village, and Brooklyn Heights. Starting in the 17th century, cobblestones began to replace the city’s oyster shell and dirt streets.
